day 23 Golden to Grindrod, 155 miles
june 23
we woke up to storm clouds over Golden which, frankly, we have come to expect. this will forever be known as the June Trip During Which It Rained Most of the Time. which is not to say our enjoyment or fervor is diminished however it HAS taken some getting used to. of course, the SNOWSTORM on JUNE 6TH in NORTH DAKOTA set the bar pretty high (or was that low?) and we've been hailed on hard more than once. so a little rain every day seems like nothing, at this late date.
we passed through Glacier National Park today, small, but another stunning jewel in the crown of Canadian National Parks. over 400 glaciers tucked high up in the bowls of the mountain peaks (though none can be approached or trod upon like Athabasca where we were yesterday). the LIGHT that shines from this ancient ice is otherworldly, almost blinding. with sunglasses on, i feel like i am gazing at the entire history of the planet.
coming out of the Rockies takes some adjustment. into the foothills which are lush with pine forests and dense vegetation, symphonic palettes of green on the huge rolling hills but still very tame compared to the drama and intensity of gargantuan craggy glaciered peaks, one after the next.
we have landed in Grindrod, a fertile fruiting valley, at the home of Jeff and Nadine Person, friends of new friends in Flin Flon. tomorrow, we will make some tracks towards Vancouver.
Will you understand me if I tell you that I am very sad to think of you leaving Canada? I like the Canada trip and your posts and the pictures. I will miss it greatly.
